I was swapping some childhood Nostalgia with a friend, when I recollected a cold winter at Nasik when I was four year old. I have very faint memories, but one of them was the Monkey painted on the walls of Nasik. This big black monkey was grinning at the passersby, baring his snow white fangs!
This was an advertisement for Monkey छाप rakhundi, which was the black coal tooth powder. This was my first memory of a consumer product. A regular rubbing of this e rather rough black powder on your teeth was a promise to have your teeth shining a pearly whites. Later there were many toothpastes from Binaca to Colgate vying for attention and the Monkey on the wall with his white teeth was a distant but pleasant memory of childhood.
After this sharing of Nostalgia, we parted.
A few days later, a courier came to my consulting room with this package!
The Monkey of my childhood has become modern and now uses a toothpaste made of the same powder stuff.
Apparently the producers had come to know about my reminiscing of the Monkey on the walls of Nashik, and decided to surprise me with this gift.
I am eager to try this new and modern Avatar of the good old Monkey छाप toothpowder.
Most of the teeth in my mouth are already white ( as they are artificial crowns ) but I would still love to give it a try whether the remaining ones will match the Monkey's pearly whites.
They may or may not turn white, but I can match the grin of the Monkey on the wall.
